COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Property owners in Columbus who rent out their buildings for parties and events may soon be held accountable.

An ordinance proposed by the Columbus City Council would charge property owners $75 when they rent for events of 40 or more people where alcohol will be available.

The draft ordinance does not require security or liability insurance, but that could be added. The proposal would apply to everything from the Trotter Convention Center and Riverwalk to the Lowndes Fairgrounds and churches.

Violence and emergency calls at a handful of locations int he city prompted the call for rules that would hold property owners more accountable for safety.
