Columbus, Miss (WCBI) – Its official, Columbus Fire & Rescue Chief Ken Moore is leaving his department after 30 years. That was announced at city hall today[Monday] around noon.

Everyone wanting to can now officially gets to see the retirement letter being presented to the mayor, city councilmen, and other department heads of the Friendly City. Columbus Fire Chief Kenneth Moore is leaving the department after three long decades, but not without numerous achievements.

“We made history here as being the first fire department in the city of Columbus under chief Moore’s leadership to become Nationally Accredited. And the first in the state of Mississippi,” said Mayor Smith.

Another plus for Moore who became chief in 2005, lowering the city’s fire rating from five to a four, allowing residents and businesses to enjoy lower fire insurance premiums. And his leadership style.

“He got the job done. And all of the employees that worked under his leadership knew what his expectations were and either abide by whatever the rules and regulations were or you suffer the consequences,” said Smith.

“He was hard but he was fair. He believed in doing things the right way and also you know, he believed in trying to get the best and the most out of each person. And that’s what he thrived on,” said martin Andrews, Assistant Fire Chief.

“Kind of envious of those that will get to see that whip cracking style, but I’m pretty sure they’ll figure out pretty soon that Ken Moore is a friend, he is a friend through and through,” said Duane Hughes, Columbus Fire Department.

Under Moore’s tenure, that national accreditation status makes Columbus not just one in the state, but also one of less than 200 in the country to meet such strict standards. Accomplishments Moore is sure to take with him to his next duty station.

“But he was a hard worker, he was dedicated and he was committed to getting the department to the level where it is today. And that just goes to show you that hard work pays off,” said Smith.

“My opinion, the best that any fire department can have. You know he is no nonsense. You know, come in do what you suppose to do and go home. Make sure everybody else goes home,” said Jeff Edmondson, CFD Engineer.

Chief Ken Moore’s retirement is effective March31st. Don’t look for Chief Moore around the fire station much, he is using up his precious unused accrued vacation time.
