COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Firefighters say they may never know exactly what caused last week’s fire that claimed the life of a Columbus girl, seriously injured two others, and destroyed or damaged seven apartments.

Fire department leaders say for now the fire at Jamestown Apartments likely will be ruled accidental with no specific cause, unless the state fire marshal makes a more detailed finding.

The state inspector has made two trips to the scene in search of clues.

11-year-old Oronjula Shanklin died after she was separated from her mother and siblings as they tried to escape from the second floor of their townhouse.

Fire inspectors know the fire started in their unit and spread to others, including the adjacent apartment where a mother and teenage daughter were burned but rescued.
