COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Columbus leaders balk at handing over $100,000 or more for a new outdoor gun range until they get more details on the added costs.

Ward 3 Councilman Charlie Box convinced the council Tuesday night to delay action on the request for two weeks.

The city and county are splitting the expenses for the gun range, which is designed to save Columbus Air Force Base $100,000 per year, and help protect it against the next round of federal base closures.

A $1 million state grant and $300,000 in city and county funding were expected to cover the 2-acre project off Yorkville Road.

But expanded dirt work and other factors have pushed costs higher than expected.
