COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-A special meeting was held Tuesday night between the Columbus School Board and City Council.

Members of the school board and city council exchanged questions and answers regarding ways to improve the school district and the future of the town.

Many topics were discussed from the state of the school district, finding an alternative use for the magnolia bowl and how to incorporate community figures such as the police department and pastors into the school system.

The school board and city council say this is just the first step to developing a positive future.

“It had a positive vibe to it. I think that both the city council and the school board came in really wanting to understand what can each entity do to drive student achievement upward,” says Angella Verdell.

“It was a historical meeting because you had the municipal school Board as well as the mayor and city council sit down and talk about a few of the issues that a lot of folks in the community are talking about. So to that point, it’s a start,” says Kabir Karrieum.

The school board and city council hope to meet again in the near future.
