COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — The search for a new police chief in Columbus won’t start until after an interim is in place.

Mayor Robert Smith tells WCBI the city council will select an interim chief next week.

They will also begin discussing the process for hiring a new permanent chief.

He says they may consider making changes to the job description and the salary.

They will also decide whether to advertise locally or nationally to fill the position.

The council accepted Chief Tony Carelton’s resignation Tuesday night. It’s effective November 12th.

Captain Fred Shelton is currently in charge of the department.
