COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — The Columbus Rotary Club had a chance to pick the city police chief’s mind this afternoon.

Columbus Police Chief Tony Carleton today discussed a spectrum of topics with club members, ranging from police training to department-sponsored events.

Carleton told Rotarians one of the biggest challenges local law enforcement faces is the relatively low number of training hours entry-level officers generally see, which is upward of 480 hours. However, he said such issues prompt city police departments to take up any variety of field training programs.

Departmental transparency is also a key element for Carleton, who is trying to encourage a more interactive and open civilian-to-police relationship.

“Well, I certainly want the City of Columbus to know that our department is transparent,” Carleton said. “I welcome people to come in and to become familiar with our department and the officers. Again, it comes back to public trust, and I want the City of Columbus — the citizens here, especially — to trust our department and our officers.”

Carleton said he’s working to create that relationship through a number of tactics, including programs like Coffee with a Cop.
