COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-According to the National Retail Federation, Americans celebrating Easter will spend around $137 per person.

With Easter almost here, many shoppers spent Good Friday getting ready.

Aly Chance says, for her, shopping is more than just retail therapy. It’s a family tradition.

“My grandmother used to always take me dress shopping and we go and look and we’d make a day of it shopping for an Easter dress,” says Aly Chance.

And the Chance family isn’t alone. Retailers expect to rake in nearly 15.9 billion dollars Easter weekend. Just ask Columbus retailer, Homer Beaty.

“We’ve had a lot of people come in just like the lady that just walked out the door she said she came in earlier in the week and saw a dress she liked and she came back today to get it and it was gone. She said I wish I bought it when I saw it. But Yes, we’ve had a lot of people in all week long,” says Homer Beaty.

The after church Easter lunch also means an increase in sales for grocery stores.

“To me it’s like a normal regular meal so I hardly do dressing but since my daughter is home I’m going to do the dressing with the sides and dessert,” says Delois Rice.

Food Giant shoppers have almost cleared out the Easter section.

Store manager, Terry Brownlee says they are even purchasing food that is well known during winter holidays.

“Turkeys are doing well. Usually we associate that with Thanksgiving and Christmas but turkeys are moving quite rapidly,” says Terry Brownlee.

At the end of the weekend, most shoppers won’t mind the few extra bucks spent for the Easter holiday.

Nearly 12 percent of Easter retail purchases will be made online.
