COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Columbus athletic facilities are getting a facelift.

The city school board has approved spending up to $2 million for everything from artificial turf for football and soccer fields to an indoor hitting facility and locker room for the baseball team.

A new track, expanded weight room, softball field improvements and work at Columbus Middle School also are on the list.

Sports families have pushed for years for the improvements, noting that Columbus lags far behind most schools its size in facilities. They say it’s important to not only training athletes but also to attracting families to city schools.
