COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-Columbus Organizers say the 74th annual Columbus Spring Pilgrimage is the best in memory.

From great catfish to the first Columbus Pilgrimage Half Marathon, local and out of town visitors spent 16 days touring the friendly town.

Even though members at the Columbus and Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau are still tallying the exact numbers, they say this year was a success.

“I can tell you that it’s over a million dollar impact. Hotel rooms on multiple days were all booked,” says Nancy Carpenter.

By offering a wide variety of events, Nancy Carpenter believes it’s a unique way to not only showcase local history but other local traits.

“We had so many guests who came here who are interested in possibly moving to Columbus and you just can’t pay for advertising and interest such as that,” says Carpenter.

With visitors from 37 states and 6 countries, historic home owners like Carol Boggess always look forward to the reactions from tourists.

“Wisconsin were the most interesting because the really were it was an eye opening experience for them to come down here,” says Carol Boggess.

Since 2008, Boggess and her husband Joe, use the Columbus Spring Pilgrimage to offer a new experience for many.

“I feel very privileged to be able to do this. My mother-in-law did this for many years until she was just unable to do it anymore and I think she would be very pleasing to know we are carrying on her tradition,” says Boggess.

This was the first year the Pilgrimage was opened for 16 days instead of the usual 12.
