COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — A group of Columbus high school and college students is giving back to their community.

Some students from West Lowndes High School and Mississippi University for Women were at Loaves and Fishes, Wednesday, to help feed the homeless and other residents in need.

It’s part of Global Youth Service Day – an annual event where young volunteers from all over give back to their communities.

“When I was first contacted about this, I thought it was about teaching teenagers how to cook something simple, something healthy, to get them away from snack foods and fast food restaurants, but then it turned into a community event,” said Wilson Beck, a chef at Zachary’s.

Global Youth Service Day is usually observed in April.
