Video: Commemorating The Sesquicentennial Of The Civil War

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -The Columbus Lowndes County Historical Society got together with the Golden Triangle Civil War Round table for the first time to commemorate to sesquicentennial of the Civil War.

Local history lovers filled the Lee Home Museum to gaze into the past and continue honoring those who fought in the Civil War.

“Preserving history, interpreting history is something that I love to do. I used it years ago to train soldiers and now I use it still to train soldier but I love it to teach to all ages like this,” said Parker Hills, Retired General and speaker at the event.

Columbus’ reputation as a hospital town and some brave local folks helped keep the city standing during Grierson’s Raid.

“Grierson came through Mississippi this part of Mississippi this month 150 years ago, actually over in Starkville and did some damage to the town so Columbus was spared because we chased him off. He was really part of a diversion for General Grant’s invasion of Mississippi as part of the Vicksburg campaign,” said Kimble Johnson, President of the Golden Triangle Civil War Round Table.

Reenactors in the guise of General Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia helped the history lesson come to life.

“Portraying General Grant I’m only a walking talking 3 dimension teaching tool that can respond to students and hopefully my appearance and what I have to say will peak and spark that interest in young people so they’ll want to read and learn more,” said re-enactor Dr. E. C. Fields.

This was the biggest turn out the Golden Triangle Civil War Round Table has had in the last 30 years.
