WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) — The brutal beating in West Point over the weekend has left the community shocked and trying to understand why it happened.

The shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri has also brought a debate on race relations in the country.

A recent poll by the Pew Research Center says most Americans are displeased with police accountability.

Nine out of 10 African Americans believe the police do a poor job when it comes to equal treatment.

MSU Assistant Professor Ravi Perry says America’s racial history can partially explain why these events continue to occur.

“What we do know is that there is discontent between groups that have different histories in the United States, and particularly very different histories here in Mississippi,” Perry said. “We should not be surprised that occasionally these incidents arise.”

West Point police are investigating this weekend’s beating, and say a grand jury will decide if a hate crime enhancement will be added to any charges.

Courtez McMillian was arrested pending charges of aggravated assault in the case.
