COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Some dedicated folks in Columbus gathered at Sim Scott Park today to help clean up the city.

Community members, policeman, fireman, Fedex employees and church organizations spread across North Columbus picking up trash and debris. Firefighters also went door-to-door to check smoke detectors for some Columbus residents. Ward 5 Councilman Kabir Karriem hosted the event and says clean neighborhoods also lead to safer neighborhoods.

“Where there’s filth, there’s crime. What we’re trying to do is alleviate the filth in the neighborhood that will also alleviate the crime in the neighborhood,” says Karriem.

Karriem says Saturday’s cleanup effort was a great example of how the community can play a role in the city’s outlook.
