TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — If all goes well, construction on a new Tupelo Police Department headquarters could begin early next year.

Police officers and city leaders say they welcome the change it’ll mean for the department and taxpayers.

The Tupelo City Council is reviewing final plans for the 2-story, 38,000-square-foot building planned for four acres that was the site of a former illegal cigarette sales operation.

Current cost estimates are under the city’s $10 million budget with about $400,000 to spare. City leaders hope enough will be left for motorcycle unit offices and bomb disposal.

If the plans are finalized, site work would begin early next year with construction taking about 12 months.
