CORINTH, Miss. (WCBI)-A suggestion to hire rather than elect the police chief in Corinth is stirring controversy. Aldermen are reviewing a draft ordinance that would call for the change. If approved, voters could consider the issue during next year’s city elections. Supporters say it would allow the growing town to draw from a larger pool of candidates to find the best candidate possible to run the police department. Opponents argue it would concentrate the authority in the hands of the six aldermen rather than the general public. Current Chief David Lancaster opposes the idea. Aberdeen is considering a similar move and is waiting for Governor Phil Bryant to set a date for a special referendum for voters to decide.
