MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) — Soybeans are now the crop of choice for Mississippi farmers, but cotton is making a comeback.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Mississippi farmers have planted two and a quarter million acres in soybeans this year. That’s a 12 percent jump from last year. Cotton acreage sits at 400,000 which is a 38 percent hike from 2013 numbers.

To make room for the increased cotton and soybean fields, corn production has been cut 37 percent. Ag economists say price plays a major role in the changes but add farmers are also rotating their crops more this year.
