TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) -With the announcement of new jobs also comes a reality check about the area’s economic strengths, weaknesses, and challenges.

Businesses leaders and politicians got the update from research and economic development experts at the annual “State of the Region” meeting in Tupelo.

One speaker says, it’s vital North Mississippi find ways to keep college graduates in the area with competitive wages.

“You are lucky here, in that folks are hard at work creating high wage jobs, the challenge is to make sure that young people who grew up here, are connected to those jobs, not people who move here from someplace else, now we all like people to move here from someplace else, but we also want people who grow up here to have a fair chance opportunities that are present.”

The event is sponsored by The CREATE Foundation Commission on the Future of Northeast Mississippi.
