COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — As a part of the ongoing series, “Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle” Columbus/Lowndes Public Library presenter Dr. Max Grivno makes a good case for the understanding and involvement of Black Mississippians In The Civil War.

Examining records in Washington, the capital in Jackson, and testimonies from Union Soldiers, according to Grivno African-Americans in East Mississippi understood the consequences and causes of the war between the states. Out of chaos, Civil War Blacks used war to seize their freedom.

“They would lead them along roads through swamps to places where supplies may have been hidden. They were sort of the trusted source of military intelligence for northern armies as they moved into Mississippi,” said Dr. Max Grivno/Library Presenter.

The Created Equal library series is funded in part by the Gilder Lehrman Institute, National Endowment For the Humanities, and the Mississippi Humanities Council.
