ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) — If the Aberdeen budget proposal stays on track, residents will be paying higher property taxes.

Right now, the plan calls for a 4 mill increase. That’s about $40 more per year on a $100,000 dollar home.

Aberdeen Mayor Cecil Belle and aldermen hope to find more savings to reduce the tax hike before meeting Sept. 15 to approve the final budget.

Meanwhile, the Aberdeen School District is not seeking a tax increase, and could cut its tax rate.

The new budget year begins Oct. 1.
