COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Lowndes County’s Airbus Helicopter could see a big jump in its Pentagon order for its Lakota light utility helicopter. The Senate Appropriations Committee today approved a 2015 defense spending bill that includes 55 of the choppers next year. The bill also ups funding for the current year to buy 21 more in addition to 20 already funded. The bill is a sharp contrast to two years ago when the community rallied to save the Lowndes plant from drastic reductions. That came after the Pentagon threatened to end purchases of the helicopter, which is replacing the Blackhawk in many search and rescue, drug interdiction, border patrol and related missions.
