MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY, Miss. (WCBI) -Students and faculty at Mississippi State turned out in their best blue jeans today. It was all a part of MSU’s “Denim Day” to raise awareness of Sexual Assault.

Denim Day has become an international protest against sexual assault, since the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape decision several years ago, claiming that the victim contributed to the crime, because she was wearing tight jeans.

“It’s important that people understand some of the misconceptions about sexual assault, and here at Mississippi State we are really working to change those misconceptions, and bring about an awareness among students, faculty, and staff.”

Today’s participants were also encouraged to donate denim items to benefit Safe Haven, an area shelter for victims of domestic violence.
