COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — It’s an Air Force tradition — marking a commander’s departure with a final flight.

Outgoing Columbus Air Force Base Commander Col. Jim Sears took time out to take the controls of one of the base’s T-38 Talons for one last sortie this afternoon.

Sears leaves Columbus in July to take a position in San Antonio.

While he is excited about his new assignment, he says he and his family will miss Columbus.

“This has been nothing but an honor to be at Columbus Air Force Base to be the commander, to be the senior pilot here, but also to be a part of this great community that’s around us,” Sears said. “And not just Columbus, but all of the surrounding area communities. It’s been an honor, and I will remember this forever. And I don’t see how I can have a better job in the Air Force.”

Sears hands over command of the base to Col. John Nichols July 11.
