STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s been two years since 16-year-old Devin Mitchell was killed in a New Years Day shooting.
His family and friends are keeping his memory alive by forming a scholarship fund in his honor.
The Mitchell family is hoping to expand their scholarships, giving away more money to youth, allowing students to achieve their dreams.

“A very kind, lovable person. His main objective was to help people,” said Devin’s mother, Myrtle Mitchell.

That’s how Myrtle and Aubrey Mitchell describe their son, Devin.

He was a stand-out athlete, a star student and a devoted church member.

On New Years Day in 2013, Devin was killed in a drive-by-shooting.

Months after his death, Devin’s family created a scholarship fund in his memory.

“To keep his legacy alive, I wanted to give back to the community to a very deserving young person that wants to continue their education,” added his mother.

The family has given away a $2,000 scholarship to one student each year but they have bigger plans for next year.

“We want to give more next year to 2,3,4 young persons that wants to further their education,” added his mother.

His parents want to expand the fund to help as many people as possible, just the way Devin would have wanted.

“He played travel ball, baseball, he played football, he ran track, he power-lifted. He did all of these things but all of these things he did because he believed in God. He trusted in God. He put God first in everything he did and I think that’s what brings out more than anything is they saw Devin but they saw God in Devin and that really keeps everything going,” said his father, Aubrey Mitchell.

The first Saturday of next June will be recognized as “Devin Mitchell Day” in Starkville.

“I want all the children to come out and have a good time and play, just be free on whatever they want to do and everybody get along,” added his mother.

Planning has already started for the big day. Until then, the family will share his story and live by Devin’s motto,  “Everyday is a good day.”

“God is good and it’s all because of him we’ve been able to stand and do what we do,” said his parents.
