COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — It’s a great teaching tool right in their own back yard. But many teachers don’t realize it. The Tenn-Tom Waterway Development Authority hopes to change that. Armed with a $500,000 federal grant, the Authority convinced the state education department to require water transportation be included in the state’s K-12 curriculum.

Now, Mississippi State is training teachers on unique ways the 234-mile waterway can become a classroom. The ideas range from lessons on wildlife and plants to writing about the waterway’s economy and history to calculating water displacement in locks and dams.

18 teachers in this week’s seminar saw the waterway first-hand today during a boat tour from Columbus’ Southside through the lock and dam to the Columbus Marina.
