MAYHEW, Miss. (WCBI) – Three weeks, that’s all that remains of summer for area college students.

Orientation at colleges and universities make the transition easier.

Judge Tate, 24, is a first-time college student.

This orientation session at EMCC means new opportunities for the Starkville native.

“I always wanted to do school but it’s always the money issue, is it the right time,” said freshman student, Judge Tate.

Tate works at Southwire, a wire and cable manufacturer, in Starkville.

Southwire is paying for Tate to continue his education at EMCC and then onto a university.

He says this opportunity will allow him to advance within the company.

” It’s always the best thing to try to move up, you never want to plateau in anything. So, my goal is to get the degree and move up in the job. It’s the opportunity, it’s right in front of you, you have to go on and take it,” said Tate.

Tate will be in the maintenance technology program, enrolled in 19 hours and working full-time.

He says it means a lot to work for a company that values their employees.

“If the company is willing to pay to go to school, then they’re actually giving you the opportunity to make more money for yourself down the line in the future, which is also important too. Me being young and me trying to better myself within life,” said Tate.

And although he knows he tackling a big challenge, Tate says he’s ready.

“Nervous really, so just decided to step out on faith and see how it goes,” added Tate.

Classes begin on August 17th.

Registration for the fall semester ends on August 14th.
