MAYHEW, Miss. (WCBI) — East Mississippi Community College (EMCC) and property owners around Mayhew could get a big boost to their pocketbooks.

A deal in the works between the East Oktibbeha County fire district and District 5 in Lowndes County would make East Oktibbeha the first fire responder to the EMCC campus and nearby areas.

The East Oktibbeha station is only four miles away, while the nearest Lowndes County station is more than five miles. The shorter distance and pending agreement could lower the fire rating from 10 to 8, which would mean as much as 35 percent savings in insurance premiums.

As part of the deal, East Oktibbeha would charge a $50 response fee and $200 per hour for each call.

The final language and agreements still are being worked out.
