WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) — East Mississippi Community College (EMCC) President Rick Young and Golden Triangle Campus Chief Executive Officer Paul Miller updated West Point Rotarians about how the community college is striving to do that.

Currently, the college has a couple of big projects under way, including a brand new student union and a off-campus addition to its manufacturing program.

Miller said EMCC purchased a 12-acre lot just east of the PACCAR Engine Company, which will house a new Center for Manufacturing Technology Excellence facility which has been dubbed the EMCC Communiversity.

The facility will teach advanced manufacturing and aerospace training in an effort to create an uptick in the number of highly-trained manufacturing personnel which are turned out each year in the region.

“We hope to be able to install programs that would begin reaching students in the eleventh grade, (and) provide them with opportunities to begin that advanced manufacturing training with opportunities to either exit the program and go directly to work, or stay in the program and gain additional credentials,” Miller said.

Miller said EMCC is still attempting to garner funding from local, state and federal sources. So far, Lowndes, Oktibbeha and Clay counties have together pledged a $13.5 million contribution, while state legislature has already appropriated about $8 million.

Within the next several weeks, Miller said EMCC hopes to have selected a chief architect to oversee the project from start to finish.

The facility is expected to open sometime in either late 2017, or early 2018.
