STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Food insecurity is a national issue and so “Empty Bowls” a Mississippi State University student organization joins forces with an academic department to help feed the hungry in Starkville.

This World Food Day, a silent auction at Bost Extension Center Auditorium is helping to raise funds by allowing people on campus to buy lunch and one of 200 empty bowls so that bowls of the needy will be filled. The bowls were designed by well known staff at the University along with members of the community.

The goal of the event is to raise $5,000. The money raised will help stock local food pantries in the Starkville area.

“Charities that we’re giving to is backpack buddies at the Methodist Church and they serve children who get free lunch at school, but then when they go home on the weekends they don’t have anything to eat and they go to bed hungry,” said Anna Laurin Harrison/Empty Bowls Facilitator.

The auction will help donate food to Peter’s Rock Church, Starkville Church of God, and Backpack Buddies in Starkville.
