TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s been a day full of events to remember the one year anniversary since a devastating EF-3 tornado ripped through the city of Tupelo.

One of those commemorative events is the unveiling of a collection of pictures that document the devastation of the tornado.

The exhibit is at Fair Park, titled “Tupelo Tornado…Tupelo Spirit…Tupelo strong…”

It shows the destruction, aftermath and recovery efforts in the months following April 28, 2014.

The pictures were taken by Tupelo attorney and photographer, Pat Caldwell.

The exhibit is dedicated to John Servati, a Tupelo native who was killed when the tornado ravished through Tuscaloosa last year.

Servati was a Tupelo High School alumni and a member of the swim team at the University of Alabama.

Caldwell says the gallery is a way to honor the young hero and remember how far the city has come in the past year.

“I never dreamed this day would happen. But just thought, hey this needs to be memorialized day-to-day because our landscape was changing daily. My neighborhood was changing daily, lives were changing daily. It just hit me somewhere along the way, we need to recognize John’s life because as I said from the podium, you could have put John in any of these images of people helping because that’s the kind of kid he was,” said photographer John Caldwell.

The exhibit will be in front of city hall through May.
