VERONA, Miss.(WCBI)–Just because Spring and Summer are behind us, it does not mean the end of your vegetable garden. Veggies and flowers can be grown successfully during the fall and winter months. A Garden Expo takes place at the North Mississippi Research And Extension Center in Verona Saturday.

Be mindful that people who seem to have a green thumb in Summer, can grow some of those same plants and veggies way into the cooler months of the year. For instance, there is no reason not to enjoy okra or vine ripened tomatoes during this present season.

“You would have started those from seed or from a transplant about 30 days ago. But you could grow those throughout the fall and have tomatoes all the way into the first heavy freeze,” said Jeff Wilson/MSU Horticulture Specialist.

Of course some backyard crops are strickly for the Fall.

“Such as broccoli and cauliflower and lettuce and all of the different greens. Mustards, and collard greens. And things like that,” said Jeff Wilson.

There is certainly not as many insects in Fall, and no sweltering heat of the sun, just mild weather for working your designated growing space. There is one crop you are sure to see in Fall and Winter…..pumpkins.

“And a lot of people raise pumpkins for this time of the year. And those you start in June or early July depending on the cultivator that you are raising,” said Jeff Wilson.

The same applies to some flowers like Chrysanthemums.

“Of course pansies and violas or johnny jump ups are used throughout the winter. Ornamental cabbages and kale is used quite a bit along with swiss chaud,” said Jeff Wilson.

So don’t be deceived, something green and tasty, can indeed be successfully grown in Fall and Winter months.

There is a Fall Flower And Vegetable Tour at the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center in Verona Saturday starting at 9:00 A.M.
