PLANTERSVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — The building dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony was a celebration.

Almost 200 students will use the new seventh grade building at Plantersville Middle School (PMS) every day. It is the first completed project from the $13,500,000 school bond issue passed by Lee County voters.

Moments after the ribbon was cut, guests were invited to tour the 6,500-square-foot building which has five classrooms and a work room for teachers. Barbara Shannon Armstrong was among those taking the tour. Armstrong taught second grade at Plantersville for years, and still volunteers several times a week.

She says the new building is more than just brick and mortar — it represents opportunities for students.

“Taking advantage of every opportunity for learning means a great future for them,” Armstrong said. “That’s what I look forward to, our children having a great future.”

Before this building was completed, seventh grade teachers and students were in a temporary metal facility.

“They are very excited to have a building erected during their era,” PMS Principal Rodney Spears said. “They’re excited about having it.”

“It’s better because you are not squished all up in a little space,” Seventh grader Kaniah Isby said.

“It’s really great, it’s better for learning and has a whole lot more space,” Wesley Caygle, also a seventh grader, said.

The $734,000 building has been open since school began in August.

There are several projects ongoing as part of the bond issue, among them, construction and additions at Saltillo Primary and Saltillo High School.

Bids are also being taken for work at Mooreville Middle School, and the design work is underway for renovations to Guntown Middle School.
