MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — A July 14 sentencing date is set for a former Monroe County deputy after his guilty plea for hitting a handcuffed inmate.

Danny Earl Starks admitted to a federal judge he hit a handcuffed inmate in the face with his fist in October 2012.

According to Sheriff Cecil Cantrell, Starks had arrested and handcuffed the victim after the man was attacking his wife.

The suspect then spit on Starks, leading him to retaliate. The former deputy could spend a year in prison.
