TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — The controversial rebuilding of a taxi way at the Tupelo Regional Airport appears to be moving ahead. The Mississippi Department of transportation has okayed a $500,000 grant to help pay for the upgrades. That decision means the airport authority can now claim an additional $500,000 from the city which was contingent on the state grant being approved.

The taxiway is used to move large planes like the 747 which are being dismantled at the airport by Universal Asset Management. The city council had fought paying for the work saying UAM should bear part of the costs because it was the weight of the large planes damaging the runway.

UAM countered its lease with the city required the airport to make any repairs and upgrades
