TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — 26 years of caring for girls with no place to live has come to a close in Tupelo.

The Gardner Simmons Home for Girls has decided to shut down.

The home was founded in 1988 and served as a group home for girls.

Changes in the way foster care is handled and funded in the state cut into the demand and finances for Gardner Simmons.

Gardner Simmons was started to remember Tupelo natives Margaret Gardner and Robin Simmons.

The Ole Miss sorority sisters died during a charity walkathon in 1987 when they were struck by a passing vehicle.
