TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – A cold start to the New Year didn’t stop people from putting on their running shoes for a 5 k and kids fun run.
As WCBI’s Allie Martin reports, the race will help a Tupelo based ministry expand its mission to find a loving home for every child up for adoption.

Ninety eight people gathered at the starting line for the Genesis 5 K.

A portion of the proceeds from the 5 K and a children’s one mile fun run, benefit New Beginnings, a faith based, non profit, that promotes domestic and international adoption.

The specific project will furnish a maternity home for birth mothers.

“New Beginnings does a lot of great work and we just want to help out with that in a small way,” said Race Director, Jim Brown.

The motto for New Beginnings is; “Every Child Deserves A Forever Family.” This is the first 5 K organized for the ministry .

Participants say it is great to run for a reason.

“Doing triathalons and running, is always two fold, for my health, but when you can come out and help a worthy cause like New Beginnings, it makes you feel good no matter what time you have,” said Jeff Snyder.

“I’m just excited that they have something like this the first of the year, to start the year out right, and just to know that the money goes to a good cause, anything to do to help,” said Rashani Barath.

“I just think it’s great that a lot of these people come out here, they just care enough to be out here, it’s a good turnout,” said Dylan Allen.

Prizes were given to the top finishers, but each participant knows they are a winner for helping children , in this country, and around the world, find stable , loving and nurturing homes.

New Beginnings was organized more than 25 years ago. They also help run an orphanage in Nepal.
