HOUSTON, Miss.(WCBI)–This week’s rainey weather is also making it hard to get rid of fire ants.

Mounds of the annoying pests can be seen everywhere in fields and backyards where planting occurs.

Fire ant bait is available to kill the ants. It must be spread five to 25 feet from the mounds.

While that process which takes about a month is effective, it may be a little too wet to broadcast ant bait.

“The queen are the key, if they are not controlled they, if they are not killed in the mound and start another colony in a short distance from the original mound,” said MSU Extension Agent Scott Cagle.

Water weakens the strength of the ant bait. However, there are mound insecticides that can be placed directly on top and rain will take it inside and kill the queen.
