Video: Girl Scouts Raise Money for Breast Cancer Research

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — If you were in downtown Tupelo Saturday morning, you undoubtedly saw pink.

Girl Scouts gathered at Tupelo’s Fair Park to receive their assignments, then fanned out to pink the streets of Tupelo.

Members of Girls Scouts Heart of the South distributed pink flyers to businesses and residents along the route of this year’s annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

The event raises money for various breast cancer research and treatment programs in North Mississippi.

“The girls get to do service for the race by putting flyers out in the community to let people know how they can support the race, said scout director Jenny Jones.

She says they can do so by decorating their front yards and what day the race will be coming to their neighborhoods so that they can be aware of street closures.

Cindy Hale is Executive Director of the North Mississippi Susan G. Komen affilitate.

“I think it’s great way to make them aware of breast cancer,” she said. “It’s such a hard disease to deal with but we can bring them along and teach them to aware of themselves as they grow older.”

Even though most of the merchants along the course are familiar with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the Girls Scouts believe it is important to Pink the Streets every year to find new people who might want to donate to breast cancer research.

And many of the Girl Scouts have been touched by Breast Cancer and feel it is important to do their part.

“I think it’s a good experience to know that we’re actually letting everybody know about Pink the Streets, said Girl Scout Caitlyn Bouldin. “I have family members that actually have cancer and so I like to support it,” she said.

“We’re people that could experience like with our friends or with ourselves, ” said Girl Scout Reagan Plunkett. “Like if somebody was to experience that then we know that there are people who care about it.”

Nearly 4,000 participants are expected to be at Fair Park on Saturday, October 25. They hope to raise $65,000 – 10,000 more than last year’s goal.
