MAYHEW, Miss. (WCBI) – The school year is already winding down.

For one local school that’s the first of its kind in the state, this year has been full of firsts.

61 students come from surrounding counties to be apart of the school.

Principal Jill Savley says this year has been a learning experience.

“Everyday, we learn something new about our students. About the way that we need to tailor our instruction, about student strengths, about their weaknesses, about how to collaborate with the community college and it’s really been a great year,” said Savely.

Along with the learning also comes some challenges to overcome.

“And it was very frustrating initially for them not to get all of the information that they needed just handed to them, they had to search for a lot of their info and figure out how they needed to use it. So that was a little bit frustrating to be very honest at first but it was really amazing to see them kinds morphe them into critical thinkers and these risk takers,” said Savely.

Melissa Knippers teaches English at the school.

She says the year has been more than exciting.

“When I say rewarding, it’s just been because of our students. No matter what we have said or done, they’ve just accepted it. They’ve accepted our teaching style and the way we do things here,” said Knippers.

As for the students, they say it has been a challenge but they are hoping the knowledge they gain at the ECHS will give them a head start to a successful future.

“I want to be a doctor and I know its going to take a long time, so its good to get a head start,” said Jamya Mills.

“When I leave here, I want to become a lawyer, I want to go to Harvard, that’s my intention,” said Alexis Turner.
In August, the school will welcome in the second class, of 62 students.

They plan to add a class each year.
