Video: “Gone Fishin’ ” is Wish Come True for Hospice Patient

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -When you hear about wishes being granted you automatically think of kids fighting a chronic illness. Friday in Columbus a wish went to the other end of the age spectrum.

WCBI’s Jory Tally takes us along with an 85 year old hospice patient as he gets his wish to return to the water again.

Eighty-five year old Walcie Porter spent hours taking his grandson fishing and today Porter turned back the clock for a bit.

“I use to fish on it every day. When I first retired I bought a bass boat and when I did, I’d sit on the river every day. I was retired, I wasn’t doing nothing. I’d fix me a cooler full of food and drinks and everything and me and my grandson we’d come out here. He wasn’t old enough to go to school and me and him would come out here and we had the biggest time. “

Pro fishermen Joey Ponders set a big goal for the veteran and former Baptist Golden Triangle employee.

“We’re actually, we’ve caught some live bait, some live shads, some big shad, and we’re going after probably a 30 or 40 pound fish today so hopefully we can get him today so that’s our technique, use a live bait trying to catch a big fish.”

Baptist Golden Triangle’s Hospice program grants wishes like this through its Priceless Wish Program. Director Pam Foster says that picking Porter to receive the wish was an easy choice.

“We wanted to grant him a wish to let him know that we appreciate him and let him and his grandson go fishing again today.”

Porter looked forward to being back out on the water and planned to stay on it for as long as he could. Seeing wishes come true, Jory Tally WCBI news.
