STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) -On Saturday, State  Representative Bubba Carpenter talked about his views on Initiative 42 to a group of local Republicans.

“If 42 passes, in its form, a judge in Hinds County Mississippi, predominately black, Its gonna be a black judge, They’re gonna tell us where the state of education money goes.”

However, Bryant disagrees. He says the Initiative has nothing to do with race. He says the debate should be about whether a judge can make education funding decisions.

“When you’re in an environment like that making a speech, I don’t think they were racially charged, he more than likely was trying to be informative, but it’s unfortunate that either side would talk about race. Race should have nothing to do with an issue that is based on the constitution, whether or not a judge, again, has the authority to appropriate money and take the authority away from newly elected representatives and senators. That’s the debate, that’s what we should be talking about.”

Today, Carpenter issued an apology his comments.
