COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- It’s going to take more than a fan to cool you off this week. The heat wave we’ve been having is showing no sign of letting up.

With hot temperatures and humidity it’s important to keep cool, especially if you are working outside. This is the time of year when heat stroke is a very common illness, especially for people who spend a lot of time outside.

All this week, construction workers, maintenance crews, and even sign twirlers are having to find ways to keep cool out here.

If you are outside for hours at a time you are at risk of getting heat stroke.

The symptoms are throbbing headaches, dizziness, red hot dry skin, nausea and vomiting.

A local nurse practitioner says you can prevent heat stroke if you have to be outside.

“One of the easiest ways is to do your job early before it gets too hot, and to make sure you drink plenty of water,” said Family Nurse Practitioner, Michelle Parsons. “You also need to wear sunscreen because if your sun burnt your body can’t cool itself properly.

If you think its hot outside now, wait until you get inside your car. If its 96 degrees outside, it can reach 140 degrees in your car.

Never leave your children or pets inside a hot car.
