MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) — If the hummingbirds flying around your flowers or feeder look a little plumper, there’s a reason.

The darting little nectar feeders that fascinate kids and adults are fattening up for their annual migration to Mexico. Within a couple of weeks, they will have left for a 18 to 20-hour non-stop flight across the Gulf of Mexico.

To prepare, the birds will double their weight to store up enough energy to make the trip.

They’ll start arriving back across the region next March or April.
