FULTON, Miss. (WCBI) – Itawamba Agriculture High School beat more than 300 Mississippi schools in the Mississippi Breakfast Challenge.

The school had the highest increased participation for breakfast for two months.

On Thursday, a former Ole Miss stand-out and retired NFL star was on hand to present the school with their award.
IAHS was awarded $1,500 for winning the Mississippi Breakfast Challenge.

The contest took place September through October and the school increased their breakfast participation by 11.5% .

Former New Orleans Saints running back, Deuce McAllister hosted the school assembly.

He says talking to students about healthy lifestyles is important.

“You look at the facts where a lot of times Mississippi comes in as far as where weight is concerned. This is an opportunity for them to kind of get in front of that and not have to be behind it and it’s something they can control,” said McAllister.

The Southeast United Dairy Industry Association hosted the breakfast challenge.

McAllister has been working alongside the SUIDA and Fuel Up To Play 60 for four years.

“It’s been something that’s been very inspiring working with them and just having the access the ability to go to different schools, not only in Mississippi and Louisiana but really in 9 state areas, so it’s just about making an impact and hopefully the kids will really catch on to it because it’s a program that’s theirs,” said McAllister.

For the students, having the opportunity to hear from a football legend makes them proud of their school.

“It’s real good he came to talk to us, tell us how he cares about us, not many people get to have a former NFL football player come talk to the school, so I think we’re a real lucky school,” said student David Lacy.

“I think it’s great because he cares about what he eat and he cares about our school system,” said student Tori Suggs.

McAllister hopes the students can take away at least one thing from the day.

“They can be successful, it wont be easy but they can be successful,” added McAllister.
The check will be used for anything needed in the cafeteria.
