TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — More than 600 high school students and staffers are spending the week at Itawamba Community College.

It’s all apart of the 2014 ICC Summer Band Camp and participants are learning in several various areas of music.

Campers can take up to 9 hours of courses such as drum major, music theory and guard routine classes.

Band camp organizers say this is just one way to encourage the students to influence those around them.

“Here at this camp we have the leaders of the bands that come. So we get the kids here, they learn all these things that they’ve never been exposed to or they learn something that they might not learn during their regular band period and they can take it back and influence their peers and their band,” said Brian Cheesman, assistant band director.

Students end their camp week on Friday with a concert open to the public.
