JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) – Long hours and hard work have been spent to determine the transportation needs in Mississippi.
In December, Mississippi’s Economic Council released the Blueprint Mississippi Transportation Infrastructure Study and the Excelerate Mississippi initiative.

The initiative is to support additional funding for the state’s failing roads and bridges.

It outlines transportation needs, such as long-term funding for state and local roads.

Now, MEC leaders are asking for an additional $375 million dollars a year from the legislature to fund Excelerate , which they say is needed for many reasons.

“People that want to come to Mississippi to do business, that’s a very high priority for them that we have good transportation and another reason is just for safety,” said Joe Sanderson, Chairman, Blueprint Mississippi Transportation Infrastructure Task Force.
“What I have proposed is is any increase, if there will be one and that’s yet to be decided on gasoline or sales tax has to be balanced with the personal income tax cut. This is about 138 dollars a year that it needed for Excelerate so we need to determine a way that we can put that money back into pockets of hard working Mississippians if we’re going to take it from them,” said Governor Phil Bryant.

$300 million will be used for state roads and bridges, while 20% will go towards local needs.
