EUPORA, Miss.(WCBI) — An injured fox that was cared for, must be released back to it’s natural habitat.

Foxy is an appropriate name for the furry brownish-gray creature that’s native to North Mississippi. Foxy is rescued by people at a Eupora animal clinic.

“A guy said ‘well I just picked up a fox off the road down at the bridge from your clinic that was bleeding from the head and knocked out. And I just took him down and put him in your parking lot,'” said veterinarian Joe Duncan.

Nursing the wild furry animal back to health was more than a chore, over time it became an enjoyable task.

“He has continued to improve and he is eating and drinking. We wormed him and you can handle him pretty good. Foxes, a lot of times they are fairly calm once you get your hands on them. But still this is kind of one of those do not try this at home thing. Don’t go around picking up wild animals that are bleeding from the head or anything because you never know how they are going to act,” said Joe Duncan.

Feasting on a diet of dog food and chicken for three weeks, Foxy becomes a clinic mascot and part of the family.

“He has kind of become a pet around here but time to turn him loose,” said Joe Duncan.

“He needs to go and find his own and be with them,” said Barbara Harris, Duncan Animal Clinic.

In the words of Shakespeare’s quote from Romeo and Juliet, “parting is such sweet sorrow”. And with the animal that must be returned to the wild it pretty much sums up the departure.

“Its hard, you see to it and take care of it, and then you know you have to release it. But it can be very emotional,” said Harris.

Words of wisdom from veterinarian Joe Duncan. If you encounter a wounded wild animal, don’t pick it up, call the proper authorities.
