COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Maybe the third time will be the charm. That’s what the group trying to open a charter school in Columbus hopes. The Mississippi Charter School authorizer board today denied approval for “Inspire Charter School of Columbus.” It was the group’s second time before the board. The local group had hoped to set up a charter school for some 360 students.

In today’s decision the state board said it had questions about Inspire’s curriculum, finances, and operation plan.

“We have to ramp up our fund raising. said Rev. Darren Leach. “We have a lot of people who say they are supportive, but it’s got to translate to dollars on paper in terms of commitment. The other one is we have to get some people to sign up and thirdly, we have to do a couple of things on our application to get it a little bit more robust.”

The board did vote to allow a private group to open a charter school in Jackson.
