MAYHEW, Miss. (WCBI) -A partnership between two volunteer fire departments in two counties will put money in the pockets of some western Lowndes County property owners.

The District 5 Lowndes County volunteer unit and its counterpart in nearby Tibbee just across the Clay County line have agreed to answer fire and emergency calls in each other’s area.

It’ll mean lowering the insurance ratings from 10 to 8 at East Mississippi Community College and about 20 homes and businesses in that area.

That could mean a drop of as much as 30 percent in insurance premiums because Tibbee is within five miles of EMCC.

Currently, the campus is six miles from the nearest Lowndes County station.
