COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -Interim Columbus Police Chief Captain Fred Shelton wants more officers on the street. Three officers were sworn in at Tuesday night’s  city council meeting, along with four reserves.

The department has been short-staffed for years.

Shelton wants to hire two more policemen, along with a part-time officer. He believes the extra help will make the city safer.

“This will help us get a lot closer to being fully staffed, where we need to be. Currently, we are short about 10 officers…actively recruiting, trying to get more officers, so we can put more officers on the street and continue to do the job we need to do here in the city of Columbus.”

Shelton says CPD will recruit officers at job fairs and through advertisements.
